Contentment
The prophet Elisha had the good fortune of meeting a wealthy woman in Shunem who charitably provided him with food to eat and a chamber where he could rest. Wanting to return the favor, he asked her if there was anything he could do for her. Her reply was strange: “I dwell among my own people” (2 Kings 4:13). What did she mean? This could be an expression of contentment, as if she were saying, “I view myself as an ordinary woman, dwelling among people, and I do not desire any special treatment." Elisha could have done anything for her, but she was content to remain as she was.
With Christ, we need very little to be happy (1 Tim. 6:6-10; Heb. 13:5-6). There is nothing wrong with making plans, if we understand the Lord’s will must be done. At the same time, we should be happy in whatever the circumstances. Do you “dwell among your people?” Is Jesus enough?
